Started by young women and girls who live in the riparian zones of the River Nile in Jinja, Uganda, Girls for Climate Action is a grassroot Girl/Young women eco-feminist movement that is using their realities and experiences to advocate for climate justice at the local and national levels. Guided by a mission of actively engaging young women and girls to tackle the climate crisis and promote climate justice while centering their lived realities and experiences through advocacy and policy engagement, climate leadership, and climate education, Girls for Climate Action envisions a just world that is resilient and thrives in harmony with the environment. Discussion will explore the organization’s origins, areas of focus, impacts thus far, and the implications of the engagement of young women in environmental issues impacting communities globally.
